Pastor Josh Howerton Defends Lakepointe Church’s Use of AI-Powered Surveillance Cameras To Protect An Monitor It Environment

Megachurch pastor Josh Howerton has replied to critics in defended of Lakepointe Church’s extensive security system after criticism emerged over the reported use of hundreds of surveillance cameras, including AI-powered technology.

However, Howerton, the leading pastor of Lakepointe Church in the Dallas, Texas, area, has responded to some questions surrounding the church powerful security practices after reports circulated that its main campus has more than 400 this AI cameras.

Some of this installed technology reportedly includes an AI-powered security system capable of analyzing video feeds and helping identify people or vehicles of interest, (Mind you This Is For Security Purpose). The system has raised questions online about how such technology is used inside a church and who has access to the information it collects.

Alot’s of people have questioned whether such extensive surveillance is consistent with Howerton’s broader public highlights on freedom and concerns about excessive government surveillance.

In response, Howerton, defended the church’s approach, saying Lakepointe operates across a large amount of property and has significant areas that must be monitored for it own security reasons. He also shared the importance of protecting people who attend the church, particularly the children.

In one of his social media post, Howerton argued that there is an apparent contradiction in criticizing churches for failing to provide adequate security while also criticizing them when they take extensive measures to protect congregants.

He said Lakepointe’s stated goal is to make the church “the safest place in Texas” when people gather for worship, particularly highlighting security around children’s ministry areas.

The debate comes as churches across the United States increasingly adopt sophisticated security technology in response to concerns about violence, theft, unauthorized access and the safety of children.

Lakepointe’s use of AI-assisted surveillance has therefore opened a broader conversation about where churches should draw the line between security and privacy.

For Howerton, the priority is clear: the technology is intended to protect the congregation rather than control it. Whether that explanation satisfies critics remains part of the growing debate surrounding surveillance technology in religious institutions.

Howerton is the senior pastor of Lakepointe Church, a large multisite congregation in the Dallas area. The church’s official biography says it operates six campuses and describes Howerton as its senior pastor.
