My Transgender Identity Is the Bread of Life — Rev. Sarah Hobbs Explains Her Interpretation of Matthew 7:9
Reverend Sarah Hobbs, a famous transgender woman currently training for ministry in the Church of England, has spoken publicly about how her understanding towards Matthew 7:9 changed the way she viewed her gender identity and also her relationship with God.
While speaking at the “Love Wins” conference, Hobbs is reported to have pointed her personal experience with Jesus’ words in Matthew 7:9: “Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone?” The biblical passage became particularly significant to her during the years when she prayed for freedom from being transgender.
Hobbs further explained that she had spent more than 3 decades (30 years), asking God for what she personally described as the “bread” of release from her transgender identity. When that did not happen as expected, she began to reconsider what exactly that biblical passage meant for her. She said she eventually finalized that, being a transgender might itself have been the “bread” she had received, rather than the “stone” she had feared for a long while.
Hobbs has further described this realization as a major turning point in her Christian faith, leading her to believe that the heavenly father could love and accept her as she is.
According to the record, she began training for ordination in the Church of England in 2023 and has been involved with the Open Table Network, an organization which focused on LGBTQIA+ inclusion within Christian communities.
