While preparing for the upcoming AWAKE Houston gathering, Christian pastor and author Michael Youssef, has asked the Christian community to pay very close attention to what he described as growing Islamist influence in Texas.
Youssef, is the founder of Leading The Way and the senior pastor of Church of the Apostles in Atlanta, made these comments while discussing about the September 19 Christian gathering in Houston. The event is meant to bring Christians together for worship, prayer and preaching at the Smart Financial Centre in Sugar Land, featuring Grammy-winning artist Chris Tomlin also scheduled for performance.
Speaking ahead of the event, Youssef stated his concerns about Islamism to his own personal experience growing up in Egypt before immigrating to reside in the United States. He said those personal experiences shaped his understanding of what he considers the dangers of Islamic political movements which influenced his decision to launch the AWAKE America initiative.
Youssef’s attention is particularly focused on Texas, which he claimed that some Muslim groups are attempting to establish communities influenced by Islamic principles. He went on to say that Christians should not remain passive when they believe religious or ideological developments could affect their communities.
His comments further sparked debates over Islam, Sharia law and Muslim organizations which have become increasingly prominent in Texas public life. The Texas officials, including Gov. Greg Abbott, has also taken positions against what they describe as efforts to introduce Islamic law into the state’s legal system. Although the Muslim leaders and civil-rights advocates have disputed rhetoric portraying Muslim communities as a collective threat, warning that this simple act of claims can contribute to hostility toward ordinary Muslims.
In Youssef, however, the response should not be limited to only political action. He highlighted the importance of evangelism, saying Christians need to leave their various churches and actively share the message of Jesus Christ with people around them.
The message should not just be random but should be centred to AWAKE Houston. Organizers said the gathering is an opportunity for Christians in the state to seek spiritual revival, pray for the nation and renew their commitment to following Christ. The event is part of Youssef’s wider AWAKE America movement, which has encouraged hundreds of thousands of Christians to pray for spiritual awakening.
Youssef also pointed out the testimony of Ahmed Joktan, who was a former Muslim and later converted to a Christian and is scheduled to speak at the Houston gathering. According to Youssef, Joktan’s story demonstrates why Christians should be willing to share their faith even when doing so may be uncomfortable or unpopular.
The pastor’s message ultimately goes beyond concerns about Islamism. He has urged Christians to pursue repentance, prayer and a renewed commitment to the Gospel, arguing that political leaders and laws cannot accomplish what he believes spiritual transformation can achieve.
AWAKE Houston will take place on Saturday, September 19, at the Smart Financial Centre in Sugar Land. Youssef will preach, while Chris Tomlin will lead worship during the evening gathering. Organizers say the broader goal is to encourage Christians to seek revival in their churches, communities and across the United States.
