Rev. Will Brown Explains How The Bible Does NOT Teach Exactly Two Genders Call It Strict Binary Views Of Gender

A Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) chaplain and author, Rev. Will Brown, is currently on the public map because of his view about the way Christians discuss gender and biblical teaching.

Brown recently discussed about his book, No Longer Male and Female: A Biblical Guide for Our Questions About Gender, and this happened during an episode of A Matter of Faith: A Presby Podcast. The book explores questions surrounding gender from a Christian perspective and also encourages readers to engage in difficult subjects through Scripture and conversation.

Brown says, Christians should be cautious about them reducing gender discussions to a simple “male and female” framework. He said such an approach can create an “antagonistic binary” that could make simple meaningful conversations more difficult.

He further points to Galatians 3:28, where the apostle Paul writes about there being neither “male nor female” in Christ. Brown describes the passage as a vision of unity that does not necessarily erase every human difference.

Rather than presenting the subject as a simple debate, Brown encourages churches to listen to people’s experiences and consider how Christians can understand gender while remaining guided by the Bible.

Brown comments have simply added to an ongoing conversation within American Christianity about Scripture, human identity, and how churches should respond to questions surrounding gender.
