Hobby Lobby Founder David Green Says He Chose God Over Personal Ownership of Billion-Dollar Business

Founder of Hobby Lobby, David Green, has finally explained to the world why he gave up personal ownership to his multibillion-dollar retail business, according to him, his decision for doing that was guided by his Christian faith and his desire to at least preserve the company’s mission for future generations to come.

Sometime around 2022, David Green reportedly transferred ownership of the Oklahoma-based retailer to a trust rather than passing the company directly to his children. Green was 80 years old when he carried out the acts, although he became uncomfortable with the idea of selling the business for personal financial gain or leaving everything entirely to his family.

In one of his opinion articles which were published by Fox News, David Green further explained that he viewed himself as a steward (Servant) who’s entrusted with the responsibility to manage the company rather than him being the ultimate owner. He said this arrangement would further help protect the company’s purpose and get it right direction beyond his lifetime.

Green went ahead to share some of the challenges he faced during the 1980s, when Hobby Lobby nearly collapsed. He then attributed that difficult period partly to his growing pride and belief in his own abilities, saying the experience taught him to recognize God as the source of his success.

The businessman has constantly highlighted the importance of prayer and Scripture in leadership, he further expressed his belief that biblical principles can help to transform how businesses operate or work.

While sharing his experience, Green then warned that wealth can sometimes create difficulties among families, particularly concerning marriage and children, when financial success becomes the primary focus or point.

Hobby Lobby has grown into a major American retail chain with more than 960 locations nationwide. Despite his decision to relinquish personal ownership, Green and his family remain among America’s wealthiest, with Forbes estimating their combined net worth at approximately $13.7 billion.

His decision highlights his stated commitment to Christian stewardship and preserving the values that shaped his business.
