Reverend (Rev.) Nathan Dannison Explained Why He Can Call His God a queer God

A United Church of Christ minister, Reverend Nathan Dannison has drawn attention to himself after his unconventional theological views concerning God, sexuality and marriage.

Dannison, has served in progressive Protestant as ministry and in one of trending statements, he argued for an understanding of God that he uses language outside traditional Christian descriptions. In discussing the term “queer God,” he reportedly explained why he personally believes such language can be used within a theological framework.

He also challenged the traditional assumptions about marriage. According to Dannison, the Scripture does not provide a single, straightforward “biblical definition of marriage” and questioned the commonly repeated description of marriage as being exclusively between “one man and one woman.”

Those positions reflect the broader theological approach associated with progressive Christianity, in which biblical passages concerning gender, sexuality and marriage are interpreted through historical and cultural contexts.

Dannison’s bio includes service as a senior minister at First Congregational Church in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Then public biographical material identifies him as an ordained minister in both the United Church of Christ and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). His ministry has a strong associate with LGBTQ inclusion and marriage equality.
