North Carolina Biltmore Church Baptizes 458 People In A Day Record-Breaking Outdoor Service
North Carolina church, Biltmore Carolina celebrated a historic day of mass baptism of over 458 people during its annual Outdoor Baptism gathering on September 13, 2026.
The event reportedly took place at a private property in Fletcher, North Carolina, where a lake provided the setting for the mass baptisms. Record states that, nearly 4,000 people were present to watch and support those taking the public step of identifying with their faith and accepting Jesus Christ. Church leaders described the 458 mass baptisms as the largest single-day total in Biltmore Church’s 137-year history.
The executive Pastor Devin Goins further said the occasion was deeply humbling for the church because baptism represents lives being transformed and what church leaders see as God at work. Biltmore usually baptizes believers throughout the year during its regular worship services too, but the annual outdoor gathering seems to bring people from its different campuses together for a special celebration and praise.
Before the event, church staff contacted prospective participants to confirm that they personally understood their faith in Christ and were prepared to take baptism as a step of obedience. The gathering included people from different backgrounds and circumstances.
Among the stories was a New York City resident who single handedly traveled to Fletcher to be baptized and to accept Christ. Even those on wheelchairs were also assisted into the lake for their baptism. In some families, one person’s decision to be baptized encouraged another relative to take the same step.
The 2026 total surpassed Biltmore’s previous single-day record of 389 baptisms, which had been established at the church’s 2025 outdoor event. In September 2023, the church recorded 279 baptisms at its outdoor gathering, showing the growth of the annual celebration over recent years.
Biltmore Church also emphasized what happens after the baptism. Each participant was contacted about opportunities for continued discipleship, while those living farther away were encouraged to become connected with a local congregation.
The church traces its history to Fern Hill Baptist Church, founded in 1889 with 25 members. It later developed into a multisite congregation with campuses across western North Carolina. Biltmore says its annual Outdoor Baptism has become an important part of the church’s rhythm, bringing its wider church family together to celebrate people taking another step in their Christian journey.
