Pastor Joel Webbon, Brian Sauvé and podcaster Ben Garrett have drawn a renewed attention to a highly speculative interpretation, connecting the Greek (god) story of Poseidon with the biblical account of the Nephilim in the book of Genesis 6.
The said idea has actually been discussed through pastor Webbon’s Theology Applied and the Haunted Cosmos podcast, which Garrett co-hosts with Sauvé. In one of the pod episodes, the three men explored the book of Genesis 6, the Watchers, the Nephilim, sea creatures, and finally the possibility of Atlantis being connected to ancient biblical events.
Following the discussion about Atlantis, Garrett and Sauvé considered the possibility that Poseidon maybe or could have been one of the fallen angels which was described in their interpretation of Genesis 6. They further discussed the possibility that Poseidon fathered children with Clito, the mortal woman who was described in Plato’s account, and suggested that Atlas could have been among those offspring or children.
Webbon has reportedly published a material emphasizing that Atlantis should be taken seriously as a historical possibility. His pieces of article states that Plato described Atlantis as being ruled by ten kings descended from Poseidon and he connected the account to the biblical Nephilim.
IMPORTANT NOTICE; The Bible itself does not record or identify Poseidon, Atlas or Atlantis. Genesis 6:1–4 only discusses the “sons of God,” human, women and the Nephilim, but interpretations of the passage have been explained significantly different among Christian scholars. Some of the scholars understanding refers to sons of God as supernatural beings, while others identify them with the descendants of Seth or ancient rulers.
On the other hand, Atlantis, meanwhile comes from Plato’s Timaeus and Critias, written centuries after the biblical period. Plato’s, in his story identifies Poseidon as the city’s divine founder and refers to Atlas as one of his sons, but connecting those figures directly to Genesis 6 remains an interpretive theory rather than a statement made by the Scripture.
