Billy Corgan Opens Up About His Faith, Says Jesus Is His Lord and Savior

The longtime frontman of The Smashing Pumpkins, Billy Corgan, has come out to openly speak about his Christian faith and his decision to be more accurate about his relationship with God.

On September 23, 2026, during an episode of his podcast known as, The Magnificent Others, Corgan spoke with the Stryper singer Michael Sweet about faith, music and the major challenges artists can possibly face when they publicly discuss Christianity. Corgan therefore identified himself as a Christian, saying, “I’m a Christian as well.”

Corgan then explained that he has made up his mind to personally talk about God more openly, even though he understood the repercussions of doing so could potentially affect his career. He recalled when previously described God as the “third rail of rock and roll,” referring to the perceived risks of discussing faith within the music industry.

On the other hand, Corgan has said he no longer wanted concerns about his career or public reaction to prevent him from being truthful about his believes. Most notably, he spoke about Christ and his belief in Jesus as his Lord and Savior.

Corgan comments represent a particularly direct public expression of his Christian faith. Instead of him simply discussing spirituality in general terms, Corgan went ahead to connect his beliefs specifically to Jesus and described Christianity as part of his identity.

The conversation also flashed on the influence of other musicians who have openly discussed their faith. Speaking with Michael Sweet, whose career with Stryper has long been associated with Christian themes, Corgan reflected on what it means for an artist to be transparent about deeply held beliefs.

TAKE NOTE; Corgan’s comments do not mean that The Smashing Pumpkins as a band should be associated automatically or be classified as a Christian rock group. Instead, his statements were about his own personal faith and his willingness to discuss it publicly.

For Corgan, honesty appears to be central to the decision. He explained that if faith is genuinely part of who he is, he does not want to hide it simply because talking about Jesus could make his career more complicated.
