An Episcopal priest in Winchester, Kentucky, has shared a candid reflection on one of her life’s most difficult spiritual questions since she started the journey: what happens when we die?, She was asked.
Ryan, an Episcopal priest who’s serving in the Kentucky community, Says an older member of her congregation who was struggling with the uncertainty asked her this about two weeks ago, to clarify what happens after death and what comes afterward.
Rather than offering a definite explanation or a wrong answer, Ryan politely acknowledged that she did not know the answer. She also described the moment as an opportunity to remain present with the congregant while they wrestled with the deeper questions surrounding mortality, faith and the unknown.
The priest explained that religious ministry does not always provide simple answers to profound spiritual questions. In her view, faith can become especially meaningful in moments when certainty is totally unavailable.
Ryan said his faith rests in trusting God’s presence and love, even when the details of what lies beyond this life remain uncertain. He emphasized that his role is not to claim absolute knowledge but to offer his interpretation, pastoral presence and the experience he has gained through years of ministry and education.
Her reflection therefore, highlights how conversations about death can create space for honesty, faith and companionship rather than easy answers that do not follow the biblical way.
