Kevin Reddington, said he is considering asking the court to sequester the jury if his client, Lindsay Clancy’s if he is granted a new trial in the highly publicized Massachusetts ongoing case.
The Jury sequestration reportedly involves isolating jurors from outside information and influences during a court given trial. In a high-profile cases like this, attorneys may seek sequestration because extensive news coverage, which include the social media discussions, and public opinions can potentially affect jurors’ ability to remain impartial.
Clancy’s case has remained a widespread discussion since January 2023, when her three young children Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months died at the family’s home in Duxbury, Massachusetts. Clancy was multiply charged in connection with their deaths.
In defense to her actions, Clancy’s focused significantly on her mental state, with her attorneys arguing that she experienced a serious psychiatric condition around the time of the incident.
Reddington’s comments about jury sequestration come as his legal team continues to pursue options concerning Clancy’s case. However, the wording of the report is important: his plan to request a sequestered jury does not mean that a new trial has already been granted.
If the court does allow a new trial, the defense could argue that the enormous amount of publicity surrounding the case makes jury isolation necessary to protect the fairness of the proceedings.
